It's been a few months since I published it on Vimeo, really, but as this blog is quite dead lately, I've decided to post my animation reel here too, just to give this some life. The reel has shots from The Lady and the Reaper and The Missing Lynx. I've done all animations shown in the reel (including camera layouts).
Han pasado ya unos meses desde que publiqué mi reel de animación en Vimeo, pero ya que el blog está un poco parado últimamente, he decidido postearla aquí también, aunque sólo sea por darle algo de vidilla. La reel contiene planos de La Dama y la Muerte y de El lince perdido y todas las animaciones que aparecen, tanto de personajes como de cámaras, son mías.
More than two years ago, I started designing some characters for a TV series called "Suckers", produced by Genoma Animation, BRB and TVC and recently bought by Disney XD, who will soon start showing it. Now I can finally publish those first drawings that I used to define the characters and which final 3D models are based on.
Hace más de dos años comencé a diseñar personajes para una serie de televisión llamada "Suckers", producida por Genoma Animation, BRB y TVC, y que ha sido recientemente comprada por Disney XD, que pronto la emitirá. Ya por fin puedo enseñar algunos de los primeros dibujos que usé para definir al personaje y en los que se fueron basando para conseguir el modelo 3D final.
"La Dama y la Muerte" se llevó anoche el Goya al mejor cortometraje de animación. Y la competencia era dura. MUY dura. Estaba nominado "Alma", de Rodrigo Blaas, animador de Pixar, y con dirección de arte de mi colega Alfonso Blaas. También hemos tenido que enfrentarnos a "Margarita", de Hampa Studio, y a "Tachaan", de Rafael Cano "Rafiki", Carlos Olmo y Miguel Ángel Bellot. Todos ellos cortos magníficos que demuestran la gran calidad de la animación en España. Me enorgullece haber competido el mismo año que ellos, de verdad. Pocas veces he visto un Goya tan reñido como éste y realmente veía nuestras posibilidades muy negras. Enhorabuena a todos, que os lo merecéis tanto como nosotros. De verdad.
Y aquí abajo dejo también una foto del equipo de animación del corto el día que conocimos la nominación a los Oscars:
"The Lady and the Reaper" was awarded yesterday with the Goya to the Best Animated Shortfilm. And our competitors were tough. Really tough. "Alma" was nominated too, directed by Rodrigo Blaas (animator at Pixar) and with art direction by my friend Alfonso Blaas. We also had to face "Margarita", by Hampa Studio, and "Tachaan", by Rafael "Rafiki" Cano, Carlos Olmo and Miguel Angel Bellot. All of them awesome shortfilms that show the great quality that animation is achieving in Spain. I'm really proud of having competed the same year they did. I really mean it. Very few times I've seen such a challenged Goya ceremony. I saw our possibilities very low, honestly. Congratulations for all of them, because they all deserve this award as much as we do.

Basándome en unas cuantas fotos viejas y mi propio recuerdo, estoy haciendo un retrato de mi abuelo. No suelo usar este tipo de estilo ni de técnica, pero la verdad es que me siento cómodo pegando brochazos digitales. Aún está sin acabar (es evidente :P), pero como es algo bastante nuevo para mi, quería compartirlo. Por eso y porque lo más probable es que acabe cagándola a base de refinarlo :D
Based on a few old photographs and my own memories, I'm doing a portrait of my grandfather. I don't often use this sort of style or technique, but the truth is I feel cofortable painting with these digital brushstrokes. It's still in progress, as you can see, but because it is something quite new for me I wanted to share it. Besides, I'll probably end up screwing it up with all this painting thing :P
¡El corto ha sido nominado a los Goya! Como celebración, aquí cuelgo más cositas que saciarán vuestra sed. Para los ansiosos, lamento comunicar que el corto no podrá ser visto aún publicamente, pero tranquilos, que ya falta menos para que llegue el día :D

Por aquí, una comparación entre la animática 2D, dibujada por el propio director Javier Recio, y el resultado final. La animática fue prácticamente lo primero que se hizo del corto, lo que usó el director para contarnos la idea al equipo y, aunque luego se refinó un poco, como veréis no hay mucha diferencia. Se ha mantenido fiel a la idea de principio a fin. ¡Ole!
Next one is a comparation between 2D animatic, drawn by the director himself, Javier Recio, and the final result. This animatic was practically the very first thing that was ever made about the shortfilm. Recio used it to show us all the idea he had and, although it was later refined, as you can see there's no much difference. He was loyal to his idea from the beginning to the end. Ole!!
Y por último, una muestra del proceso de composición de la imagen, donde se ven las capas que componen cada plano para darle el aspecto final.
And finally, a show of the image compositing process, where you can see all the layers that compose each single shot of the film to give it its final look.

"The Lady and the Reaper" is in the shortlist to the Oscars!!!! Only 10 shortfilms are in that list and five of them will be nominated for the Academy Awards on February. Let's cross fingers!!!!
